From the 19th – 23rd November, Egyptians from Alexandria to Aswan came together along with a few interested foreigners to create a spontaneous event together. Elephantine Island in Aswan was the host community, and the islands youth provided the hospitality, the space and opportunity for the festival to engage with the island and it’s people.
فكرة على فلوكه (Fikra Ali Felucca) was created by everybody that took part. The product of many minds, hearts and hands.
The festival was an experiment on multiple levels:
What happens when you spontaneously create something together?
What happens when you bring together Egyptians and Global Citizens from different classes, educational backgrounds, social and religious groups?
What happens when you leave room to learn, to explore and build?
What happens when worlds meet?
The learning has been so deep and broad, and the activities untracked and widespread, so it may take time to create full documentation of the event. Others are invited to contribute their insights and learnings here. Hopefully together we will be able to build up a picture of what happened.
I will outline to begin with the highlights I experienced as I explored the activities, filled with a warm glow and sense of excitement. I hope the other participants will add to this story, fill in the details, so we can establish how the festival evolved.
For the participants reading this, please mail your own pics, videos or reflections of your experience here, and I will forward to the blog.
But let’s begin with what took place……
Each of these events is a story in it’s own right. A combination of factors, the interplay of overlapping actions and ideas. We will add documentation here as it grows.

On-going design thinking events happening in Berlin
The Felucca Festival was the product of many hands and minds. It was funded by the participants. While some participants were connected to larger organisations, they participated as individuals engaging as equals.
The Festival itself took place at what is now known as Nubialin, an evolving space that seeks to combine the creativity of Berlin, with the community and connection of Nubia. To create a space for Mutual Development, where everyone may improve their quality of life.
Documentation on the process can be found through the icehubs network and other channels, in order that the insights learned from these collaborations may be applied by others.
